Your Voting Rights

VCIL staff have been letting people know about their voting rights. Sadly, we have found that some individuals with disabilities and seniors thought they were not allowed to vote because they live in a group home or nursing home, because they have a guardian, or simply because they have a disability. Individuals with disabilities and seniors have every right to vote; and today we have more choices on how to cast our vote than ever before.

To vote in Vermont you must be a resident of Vermont and registered to vote in the town where you turn in your ballot. If you need support in registering for future elections, call one of the organizations listed below or a friend or community organization you work with.

Make Your Mailbox Your Voting Booth

Registered voters who have already requested a mail-in ballot can choose to vote by mail. This is an important option for many seniors and individuals with disabilities as well as for people who are out of state or whose work does not allow them to get to the voting place. Call your town clerk or local municipal office for more information.

A New Way to Vote at the Polls

Many seniors and individuals with disabilities can use the traditional ballot and voting booth to cast their ballots, but there is a new way to fill out your ballot for those who are blind or who have difficulty filling out the standard ballot. The following information from the Secretary of State’s Office describes the new system and tells how you can give it a “trial run” before Election Day. We hope more seniors and individuals with disabilities will both vote and share your stories and political concerns with candidates for public office.
